In Finland, Midsummer, known as "Juhannus" in Finnish, is one of the most anticipated festivals marking the beginning of summer and the longest day of the year. This celebration is deeply rooted in Finnish culture, symbolizing the fusion of nature, light, and community spirit.
Midsummer in Finland is a time when cities quiet down and people flock to their summer cottages by lakes or the sea. One of the most iconic symbols of Juhannus is the bonfire. These fires are believed to ward off evil spirits and are a mesmerizing sight against the backdrop of the midnight sun.
Another essential part of the celebration is the sauna, a cornerstone of Finnish culture. Families and friends gather in the sauna to relax and enjoy each other's company.
Moreover, Juhannus is steeped in enchanting traditions and age-old beliefs. One of the most poetic customs is the gathering of seven different wildflowers by unmarried individuals, who then place these under their pillow to dream of their future spouse. Folk dances and traditional music also play a significant role, with people joining hands in circles around the Midsummer pole. This communal spirit extends to the dining table, where families and friends indulge in seasonal delicacies such as new potatoes with herring or smoked fish, and strawberries for dessert.
Juhannus embodies the essence of Finnish summer - the beauty of nature, the warmth of community, and the joy of simple pleasures. It's a time to pause, reflect, and appreciate the light after a long winter. The festival's emphasis on nature and togetherness resonates with me deeply, making it my favorite Finnish festival.

Panagbenga Festival

The Panagbenga Festival is a renowned event in the Philippines that celebrates the resilience of Baguio City following the devastating Luzon earthquakes in 1990.
The term "Panagbenga" originates from the Kankanaey language, and it translates to "A Season of Blossoming." This name aptly represents the essence of the festival, as the city becomes adorned with various species of flowers.
One of the highlight events of the Panagbenga Festival is the Grand Float Parade. During this parade, enormous floats adorned with meticulously arranged flowers take center stage. These floats come in different shapes and sizes, often featuring popular characters or significant themes. The festival also features a dance and costume competition. Participants showcase their talents as they dance to the captivating melodies of Cordilleran music.
The heart of the Panagbenga Festival can be experienced in two main locations: Session Street and Burnham Park. During the festival, the Session Street, always becomes a vibrant hub of activities. Visitors can immerse themselves in the festive atmosphere, enjoy street performances, explore local crafts and delicacies, and witness art exhibits. Burnham Park alsotransforms into a picturesque venue. It becomes a focal point for various events, including concerts, art installations, and trade fairs.
Through its celebration of blooming flowers, the Panagbenga Festival symbolizes the resilience, hope, and renewal of Baguio City. It serves as a testament to the city's ability to rise above adversity and emerge as a thriving and vibrant destination for people to come together and celebrate the wonders of nature and culture.

Ivana Kupala

One of my favorite Ukrainian holidays is Ivana Kupala. The Feast of Ivana Kupala marks the northern hemisphere summer solstice with various rituals and special foods being part of the occasion.
This is one of the most poetic holidays on the Ukrainian ritual calendar, the main characters of which are Kupala and Maren, who personify male (sun) and female (water) deities respectively. Depicting life and death, these two characters are recreated as scarecrows and at the end of the celebration they are either drowned or burned.
The main event of Ivana Kupala is jumping over the flames of the bonfire. Legend has it that if you jump quickly you will have good health. If lovers successfully jump over the fire, they will soon get married.
During the night of July 6, unmarried women wear floral wreaths in their hair, to signify the blooming of a potential relationship, and at some point they will take their wreaths off and float them down the river. If a man picks up the wreath, this means the girl will soon find her happiness.
Now, this holiday more symbolizes the unity of people and fun. I remember when I was a little girl, I went with my parents to the park on the lake, but the big fire really scared me and I didn’t even dare to come close to it, but I happily made a traditional wreath of flowers and decorated my head with it, like all the girls on this holiday. Those wonderful memories are still fresh in my mind.

São João Festival

Every year, as June approaches, my heart beats in sync with the distant echoes of forró music, heralding the arrival of the São João Festival in Campina Grande. This festival is not just an event; it is a vibrant thread woven into the fabric of my childhood, painting memories of joy, unity, and cultural pride in the brightest colors of the Northeast of Brazil.
Growing up in the Northeast, the São João Festival was the highlight of our winter. Schools would buzz with excitement, as we, the children, dedicated weeks to practice the quadrilha, a group dance that is the cornerstone of São João celebrations. Donning vibrant plaid outfits, we learned the steps that told stories of community and celebration.
Streets adorned with lanterns and flags become stages for the quadrilha, where the community comes together, hand in hand, stepping in harmony to the rhythm of forró. The air is rich with the aromas of traditional dishes, and the night sky is illuminated by the warmth of bonfires.
São João in Campina Grande is more than a festival; it's a bridge to my past, where every note of forró music and every step of the quadrilha dance brings me closer to the innocence of childhood. Through the quadrilha, I learned the importance of togetherness and the beauty of shared traditions. São João is not just a memory; it’s a living, breathing part of who I am, a cherished chapter of my life that continues to influence me and connect me to my roots.

Heritage Day

South Africa celebrates a day on September 24 every year. It's the Heritage Day, a national holiday that brings together the rich tapestry of cultures, languages, and customs that make up this vibrant nation.
Heritage Day havsroots in the struggle for unity, freedom and equality in South Africa. Originally known as Shaka Day, it commemorated the legendary Zulu king, Shaka Zulu, who presumably died on this day. However, in 1995, the South African government officially declared September 24th as Heritage Day to embrace the nation's cultural diversity and promote unity in the post-apartheid era. Today, it becomes the most important festivals in South Africa and aims to preserve our diverse cultural heritage. Large barbecues are held in many cities, where people sit around, share the food, enjoying the joy of the holiday.
On this day, our country becomes a living display of traditions. People do their colourful traditional attire, and you'll spot everything from Zulu beadwork to Xhosa blankets, Sotho hats and too tight khaki shorts. The air is filled with the sounds of traditional music and most people will stop to enjoy the moment and even dance a little as proud South Africans showcase their unique heritage.
On Heritage Day, people put aside their differences and come together to celebrate a holiday that belongs to all South Africans. It reminds South Africans that our country is made up of different cultures, and it is this diversity that makes South Africa unique.

Día de los Muertos

Today, I want to share a very special holiday, Día de los Muertos, celebrated on November 1 and November 2. Día de los Muertos is a beautiful celebration where we honor and remember our loved ones who have passed away. It's a time when families come together to create colorful altars adorned with marigolds, photos, and mementos of those who have departed. The air is filled with the scent of copal incense, and the sound of lively music and laughter fills the streets.
I remember one particular Día de los Muertos when my family and I gathered in our hometown. We spent the day preparing traditional dishes like tamales and pan de muerto, sharing stories and memories of our ancestors. As night fell, we made our way to the cemetery, where we lit candles and placed them on the graves of our loved ones. There was a sense of peace and connection as we honored their lives and celebrated the bonds that transcend death.
For me, Día de los Muertos is a reminder of the importance of family, love, and remembrance. We must never forget our heritage and celebrate the richness of our cultures. As a teacher, I always promote the respect and understanding of different traditions and mindsets. If kids are aware of how colorful and diverse is our world, they will be ready to defeat their fears, break their limits, and embrace the world.

Burns Night

This night is not just about honoring Scotland's beloved poet; it's a celebration of Scottish culture, traditions, and the bonds that tie us to our ancestors.
